It’s the driving question leading a teacher’s reflective practice. It is
becoming harder for teachers to engage students in mathematics. However, due to
an extensive range of resources, including Matific.
Matific is an online resource used to engage young learners in
mathematical learning and concepts. It has a great emphasis of utilising ICT in
classrooms and the many benefits in aiding student learning and their achievement
in mathematics. Hence, “the Matific approach was designed to provide optimal
support for educators to convey maths concepts in as effective and engaging
manner as possible” (Matific, 2013).
Matific is an engagement tool used to encourage struggling learners to
strive to achieve their mathematical potential. Statistics have shown that
99.2% of students will return to the site and continue using the extensive
range of resources available. Students are provided with many opportunities to
develop their skills and are also provided with feedback to develop their
success in mathematics. The feedback provided through the site will allow
teachers to collect feedback about their students in order to effectively
organise their lessons based on a student’s ability. As stated by West-Burnham
and Coates (2006), feedback is a meaningful source of information for a teacher.
As seen on my practical experience, the feedback collected through the
Matific site allowed the classroom teacher to identify students who are struggling
with subject areas. He was then able to develop lessons based off the feedback
collated.
